Title: The Unhoneymooners
Author: Christina Lauren
Publisher: Gallery Books
Publication Date: May 14, 2019
Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.
Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.
Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.Review: Ever since I read Josh and Hazel’s story, I know I needed another book to fill that void and I’m so glad I found it! This story seriously reminded me of Josh and Hazel because Olive was just as quirky as Hazel and can’t help but say everything on her mind.
Honestly, I could barely contain myself while reading this book. I wanted to snort with laughter and cackle into the night. Note to self: don’t read books that will make me laugh super hard on trains surrounded by strangers. That being said, I did manage to keep my smirks and laughter to a minimum because I have too much self-preservation to laugh with wild abandon in public.
The Unhoneymooners is a a perfect hate to love story! It’s also got the fake relationship trope in which is always an amazing combo. It reminded me of the movie Just Go With it because of the whole fake marriage/vacation thing and there is even a certain scene in there that gave me HEAVY Hating Game vibes. I’d say there’s also a dash of Just My Luck in there as well.
Olive was such a fun character! She’s basically the unluckiest person alive. Her whole life is filled with memories of her sister winning at everything and her…well, let’s just say Olive has some very interesting life stories. Her one stroke of luck happens on her sisters wedding night when she begs Olive to take her honeymoon. The only catch is that she has to go with Ethan, the one man in the world she can’t stand.
The insults and banter were completely on point and I love how much Olive and Ethan get into it. They definitely have a ton of awkward moments during their trip, but I kind of loved seeing the transition of their vacation relationship into real life.
If you love a good quirky romance, this book will definitely make you howl with laughter! This is another hit romance from one of my fave writing duos and I highly recommend this perfect summer read.
