Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.divider_line (1)Review: Can you say BOOK HANGOVER?! I’m so not going to be over this book for, well…ever and I’m not sorry one bit. It put me through the emotional wringer and there were some moments that just shook me to my core. You know those moments where you scream ‘oh shit!’ and throw the book down? Those two words describe this story to a tee.

I have to say my favourite part of the book was definitely Bryce. What she wouldn’t do for those she cares about is nothing. I respected the hell out of her undying loyalty. It was fun getting to meet the many faces of Bryce Quinlan. Especially when she’s doing something to piss Hunt off. Their relationship is the best and I loved every minute of their verbal sparring! Who doesn’t love a snark and a hot head going at it?

OH and did I mention that this book deals with a slow burn romance as well? I’m talking squirm-in-your-seat moments that will leave you wanting more. If you love the close proximity and hate to love tropes…I’m just sayin’. *wink wink*

I will admit I’m still trying to figure out the world, but it’s a fascinating one. Basically there’s a hierarchy of beings who govern cities and humans get the short end of the stick. There’s also a war happening in the background and I’m interested to see what will happen as the series continues.

My only real issues with this book have to do with the writing. I noticed a ton of repeated phrases and terms and some of it drove me to the point of insanity. But honestly it’s a minor thing and my love for the book outweighs it anyway.

So yeah, if you’re looking for the next book to completely destroy you, then you need to read House of Earth and Blood ASAP. It’s a revenge-type fantasy filled to the brim with suspense and will rain emotional trauma down on you every chance it gets. Murder investigation aside, this book is basically City of Bones meets Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but for adults. There is also obviously a ton of crossover appeal as well!

So, what are you waiting for? Dive in! You know you want to…
