Remember that time when I decided setting a monthly TBR was the best way to get me to stay on track? Well, for the first time since last December I didn’t set one and I barely read at all. I’m officially dubbing October a slump month because I read two total books. Just…yikes.
I guess after reading amazing books in September (Well Met, Ninth House, The Kingdom of Copper) I just couldn’t find anything to really satisfy me. Although I did really enjoy The Chai Factor (see review here)! It was so unexpectedly amazing and I definitely need more from Farah Heron. Faker (see review here) was a total miss for me and it just wasn’t the hate to love I was looking for. But I did end the month by getting close to finishing Into the Crooked Place, which I’m definitely loving so far. The cast of characters is amazing and I’m intrigued by the magic and mystery of it all. Totally giving off Six of Crows vibes, but with more magic. OH, and I also started reading Permanent Record at the start of October, but quickly put it down for something else because the Mood Reader in me wasn’t feeling contemporary or something. When will I pick it back up? Who knows. The contemporary genre never holds my attention for very long as a general rule.
I also got some books in October as well because I couldn’t resist hitting up the bookstore and I also got some epic bookmail and attended the TeensRead Preview (recap here) as well. As for books I got myself:
So far I’ve read all of these except for Chloe Brown, which technically came a week before release. I can honestly say I loved them all except Faker, which I had high hopes for but it underwhelmed me. You can find the reviews for all of them here.
I also received some pretty exciting ARCs from publishers as well, both from the event I attended and in the mail:
I’ve been highly anticipating All the Stars and Teeth since it was announced and I’m so excited to read another fantasy with pirates! It also has mermaids, monsters, and magic which are all bonuses in my mind. Another I’m really looking forward to is Infinity Son! I haven’t actually read an Adam Silvera book yet, but I saw the word phoenix and I was THERE. It’s a fantasy set in an alternate New York and it’s about two brothers and a magical war. Oh, and it wouldn’t be an Adam Silvera book without queer characters! Basically, EpicReads explains it way better than I can. I’m also super excited for Tricia Levenseller’s new fantasy because I’ve loved all her books so far and I’m excited for another standalone. There aren’t enough standalone books out there and I keep getting sucked into series! The Midnight Lie actually popped onto my radar not long ago and I’m excited to have it because it sounds awesome.
What have you been reading lately? Are any of these on your TBR? Did you get any new books last month? Let me know in the comments!
