Title: Empress of All Seasons
Author: Emiko Jean
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: November 6, 2018
In a palace of illusions, nothing is what it seems.
Each generation, a competition is held to find the next empress of Honoku. The rules are simple. Survive the palace’s enchanted seasonal rooms. Conquer Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Marry the prince. All are eligible to compete—all except yōkai, supernatural monsters and spirits whom the human emperor is determined to enslave and destroy.
Mari has spent a lifetime training to become empress. Winning should be easy. And it would be, if she weren’t hiding a dangerous secret. Mari is a yōkai with the ability to transform into a terrifying monster. If discovered, her life will be forfeit. As she struggles to keep her true identity hidden, Mari’s fate collides with that of Taro, the prince who has no desire to inherit the imperial throne, and Akira, a half-human, half-yōkai outcast.
Why am I excited?
There are so many amazing Asian-inspired fantasy books coming out this year and this one sounds super interesting! It’s a competition for women to have the chance to become the next Empress and there’s monsters involved so consider me intrigued. I’m curious to know more about how Mari’s monstrous abilities and how they work. Do I also sense a possible forbidden romance between her and the prince? This fantasy looks like it’s going to be epic and I can’t wait to see how this competition plays out! Is it a fight to the death kind of thing or more about survival?! I’m also curious to see if there are more to these supposed monsters and if there might be some kind of rebellion as well.
Is this book on your list? Have you read any other Asian-inspired fantasy books? Let me know in the comments!
