So I did the most incredible thing yesterday! I was invited by HCC Frenzy to preview all their spring 2018 titles and I’m super excited to tell you all about it. It was my first HCC Frenzy event and my first official bookish event as a blogger.I managed to get to Toronto almost an hour before the event and I was nervous that I would be the only one awkwardly standing there waiting. It was hard because I’d never met any bookish people in person, but I met a few online that I knew would be there so I could meet them face to face. I’m always super bad a recognizing people from pictures though!
This was their first Frenzy event in their new office and it is SO nice in there. It was weird being so high up, though (41st floor!) and that elevator ride made me feel so weird. The first thing I noticed when I walked in of course were the giant pink balloons that spelled Frenzy and I knew I had to get a picture of them. A bunch of us managed to get up there pretty early so it was the perfect opportunity to take all the pics I could! The second thing I noticed was that there was a book on each chair, which was Here So Far Away by Hadley Dyer. She was also making an appearance at the event as well!
Next I grabbed a few snacks and sat down taking more pictures while I waited for more people to show up. When they did, I managed to meet some other bloggers i had been talking to online and we clicked instantly. I loved talking bookish things with them! It was great being able to put faces to people I’ve met online. So when the event started we all sat down while they played a slideshow to recap 2017 and what has published so far in 2018. A quote from one of my reviews was used and it made me squee a little bit! They also revealed their new logo, which is super cute. Then we got right into talking about the books:
There are a few from this list that I’m really anticipating and some I already had on my TBR! Click the titles below to find the synopsis:
The Diminished by Kaitlyn Sage Patterson | April 10
Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli | April 24
Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett | May 15
War Storm by Victoria Aveyard | May 15
Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton | July 31
Sea Witch by Sarah Henning | July 31
These Rebel Waves by Sara Raasch | August 7
After all the books were discussed by the Frenzy team, they brought out Hadley Dyer, who is the author of Here So Far Away. It’s a forbidden love type story set in Nova Scotia, where the author grew up. She talked about her book, the inspiration behind it, and how she crammed as much 90’s nostalgia into it as possible. It was also interesting to hear about how she went from being an editor at HarperCollins to becoming an author. She took Q&A afterwards and then went to the back to sign books. And then it was onto the post-event mingling and I got to meet some other bloggers, both new and some that I had previously met through Instagram or Twitter! It was so much fun being able to talk books and blogging with other book lovers.
At the end of the event we were each given awesome swag bags filled with so many goodies! There was everything from tea to bookish swag and even a portable charger, which will come in super handy. I also loved the tote that everything came in because it had the new Frenzy logo and on the back it says “Let’s Get Literary” (pun intended). Thank you to all the incredible sponsors for making this happen:
My Week of Tea
There were also three ARCs included in each swag bag! I managed to come away with some books that were already on my TBR, which is fantastic! I’ve been really into YA fantasy lately, so I’m glad I managed to get my hands on some exciting new reads.
Here So Far Away by Hadley Dyer
Thank you so much to HCC Frenzy for providing finished copies of this book at the event and for hosting the author! I’m all for the whole forbidden romance trope and I love that it’s set in the East Coast in Canada. I didn’t really know much about this book before the event, so I’m glad I got to learn more about it.
The Diminished by Kaitlyn Sage Patterson
I’ve been seriously anticipating this book for a while now and I’m so happy to have a copy to read. The whole concept of everyone being born with a twin is super unique and I can’t wait to pick it up.
The Bird and the Blade by Megan Bannen
This book only recently came on my radar and this event definitely pumped me up for it! I’m excited to dive in because it’s a historical fantasy set in the Mongol Empire, which I’m excited to learn more about.
Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton
Okay, so funny story about this one. I’ve been following it since 2016 and I’m happy to see it finally being published! I still can’t believe it’s in my hands. It follows a girl who hunts witches and then goes on the run when she discovers she has the same magic they do. It looks like such an awesome fantasy!
BONUS: Before the event as I was checking Twitter I discovered that I won Julie Murphy’s giveaway for an ARC of Puddin’ and I’m still not over it!
Thank you so much to the HCC Frenzy team at HarperCollins Canada for hosting such an amazing event! I got to meet so many awesome people and the whole experience was incredible. I’m still totally on a book high from it and I’m never coming down!
Did you see any amazing new books to add to your TBR? Any you’re super excited for? Let me know in the comments!
