A groomsman and his last-minute guest are about to discover if a fake date can go the distance in a fun and flirty debut novel.
Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with in an elevator is something Alexa Monroe wouldn’t normally do. But there’s something about Drew Nichols that’s too hard to resist.
On the eve of his ex’s wedding festivities, Drew is minus a plus one. Until a power outage strands him with the perfect candidate for a fake girlfriend…
After Alexa and Drew have more fun than they ever thought possible, Drew has to fly back to Los Angeles and his job as a pediatric surgeon, and Alexa heads home to Berkeley, where she’s the mayor’s chief of staff. Too bad they can’t stop thinking about the other…
They’re just two high-powered professionals on a collision course toward the long distance dating disaster of the century–or closing the gap between what they think they need and what they truly want…
Review: I have to admit this book was a total bookstagram buy for me! Basically I saw that it was a super cute romance and I had to have it. Totally did not look at the cover when I bought it so I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was an interracial romance as well!
I totally expected a total fun, whimsical, contemporary romance, but I feel like I got so much more out of it. Alexa is a proud woman of colour working for the mayor and just trying to make a difference in the world. She’s all business all the time and doesn’t allow herself any distractions. Her character is so empowering and inspiring because nothing seems to faze her.
Drew on the other hand has found himself in the most awkward position ever: he is the best man at his ex-best friend and ex-girlfriends wedding. The worst part is his date backed out at the last minute and he’s planning on going stag. That is, until he gets stuck in an elevator with the charming Alexa and suddenly he finds himself inviting her to the wedding as his date. Yup, a total stranger!
Alexa decides that this wedding is her chance to let loose and finally have some well-deserved fun. So they both put on the pretense that they are dating until the end of the night when they just can’t seem to part ways. They begin a long distance non-relationship and spend every weekend flying back and forth to see each other. Alexa and Drew never really define things, but they enjoy each other’s company. But when things start to get complicated between them emotionally, that’s when the fun begins!
There was actually a lot more depth to this book than I thought there would be, too. A lot of focus was placed on issues of race and body image, as well as some good ol’ fashioned girl power. Alexa was constantly challenging Drews stigmatized views about race and it was so empowering to read. This bookw as a total breath of fresh air for the romance genre, and while it had fluff, there was also so many powerful themes as well!
If you’re looking for a cute contemporary romance about taking risks and finding love in the most unlikely places, then I highly suggest you give this a shot.
