Author: Tomi Adeyemi
Publisher: Henry Holt and Company
Publication Date: March 6, 2018
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.
Why am I excited?
This book has been making a lot of waves lately in the YA and book community and I’m excited to see what everyone has been raving about! It’s a diverse fantasy with lots of magical elements, a potential romance, betrayal, and more. I’ve also read that there is some amazing world building and this cover has me totally hyped! There are so many great books coming out this year and I think this one is definitely going to be big. The mythology sounds so epic and reminiscent of Red Queen with the divide between Reds and Silvers, but with a refreshing cultural twist that the YA genre definitely needs. Let’s also have some appreciation for this cover because I feel like those eyes are staring into my soul and I’m getting chills. How am I supposed to wait for this?!
